“German Bread Days” – Celebrating Germany’s Baking Culture

The German Culture Week in Albania took place from October 3 to 8, offering a diverse program that highlighted Germany’s cultural, educational, and economic ties with Albania.

The week opened with a vibrant street festival, where Germany presented itself through informative and entertaining booths, interactive exhibits, and live music. The event provided organizations from the fields of culture, education, business, and development cooperation with an opportunity to showcase their work and foster new partnerships.

As part of the program, the Chamber of Skilled Crafts (HWK) Koblenz, in cooperation with the Alta AcademyNational Chamber of Crafts Albania (DHKZ), the Bread, Pastry and Dough Association of Albania, and the Oda of Prizren from Kosovo, organized the “German Bread Days” from October 1 to 3.

Bread holds a special place in Germany’s cultural identity—it is officially recognized by UNESCO as part of the country’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. With more than 3,000 bread varieties, German baking culture embodies regional diversity, artisanal craftsmanship, and a longstanding commitment to quality.

During the two-day event, two German master bakers led hands-on seminars for Albanian and Kosovar bakers and confectioners. They shared insights into traditional German baking techniques, recipes, and the high standards that define the German bakery and confectionery trade.

The highlight was the street festival on October 3, marking the official opening of the German Culture Week. Visitors were invited to sample freshly baked German breads prepared by the master bakers and to discover the rich diversity and traditions of German bread culture.

The “Days of German Bread” strengthened professional collaboration between Germany, Albania, and Kosovo, promoting knowledge exchange, vocational learning, and cultural appreciation across borders.
